Resources

Practical resources for sole traders, small businesses, and community organisations who want clearer records, calmer admin, and better bookkeeping habits — organised by what you’re trying to sort out, rather than by page title.

On this page:

1. What this page is for

Practical resources for sole traders, small businesses, landlords, and community organisations who want clearer records, calmer admin, and better bookkeeping habits.

More guides and resources will be added as MRS Bookkeeping develops.

2. Getting ready for Making Tax Digital

If you’re a sole trader or landlord affected by Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, start with the Making Tax Digital: A Plain-English Local Guide — it covers who’s affected and when, what to check now, and a step-by-step walkthrough for registering with HMRC.

3. Sorting out messy or incomplete records

Most people who get in touch start here. Financial Record Rescue is the default first step for records that feel behind, incomplete, or hard to make sense of — no need to tidy anything before asking.

Two posts that might help if you’ve been putting this off: Your Books Aren’t as Messy as You Think and Why I Couldn’t Start the Client’s Books.

4. Building better bookkeeping habits

If your records are basically under control but the habits around them could be steadier, Bookkeeping Readiness Support and Paperwork to Plan both focus on building a system that holds up over time.

5. Doing it yourself, at your own pace

For ongoing, self-directed support rather than a one-off engagement, DIY MTD Membership and Self-Managed Records Support are both built around keeping you doing the work, with guidance rather than hand-over.

6. Why records and routines actually matter

A few longer reads on the thinking behind good bookkeeping, if you want the “why” rather than just the “how”: More Than Compliance: Why Good Bookkeeping Still Matters Today, The Real Problem Wasn’t the Accounts, Why the First Bookkeepers Didn’t Worry About Tax Returns, and From Skeptic to Bookkeeping Convert.

7. Common questions

The FAQs page covers the questions that come up most — what’s available now, what isn’t yet, how onboarding works, and general bookkeeping questions like the DEALER framework and accruals vs cash accounting.

8. From the blog

9. Not sure where to start?

That’s completely normal — a short Contact message describing your situation is enough to get pointed in the right direction, no need to work out which service fits first.

10. Current service scope

MRS Bookkeeping’s HMRC AML registration has been submitted and paid for and is currently awaiting confirmation. MRS Bookkeeping is not a money service business, or a trust or company service provider, so HMRC’s own guidance confirms it can trade while that application is being processed.

Alongside records organisation, bookkeeping-readiness, practical admin support, education and clarity work, MRS Bookkeeping now also offers bookkeeping for client use, accounts preparation, VAT return preparation, MTD submissions and tax return preparation. Payroll services and formal tax advice will be added once AML supervision is confirmed. For more detail, see the AML / Service Scope page.
